South Jutland (Denmark)

Sønderjyllands Amt is located north of the German border. Beside smaller regional centres, like Aabenraa and Tønder, the county has a rural character. It is the only Danish county with a national land border and therefore sees it as an important task to support a concrete and well organised transborder co-operation. Positive results have been achieved till now, not at least owing to the practical and close co-operation with the government of the Land of Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel on border-crossing pro-jects.

Sønderjylland county (Danish: Sønderjyllands Amt) solves the public tasks of the region in a close co-operation with the 23 local authorities and the state. About 5 % of the population of Denmark lives in this region, i.e. 254.000 inhabitants, the county's area is 3.929 square kilometres.

Key-partner for Sønderjylland County is Sønderjyllands TIC & ErhvervsCenter, (South Jutland Regional Business Development Centre, STEC), which was established in 1949. In 2001 the present structure was established as a result of merging a department of a national organisation (TIC Danmark) into the existing regional organisation. The activities have thereby been expanded by further consultancy to SMEs. Sønderjyllands TIC & Erhvervscenter is the general business development and promotion organisation for the county of Sønderjylland. The objective is to develop organisations, insti-tutions and enterprises in order to make efficient use of the competences and opportunities in the region. This is achieved through providing consultancy services (i.e. technology consultancy, financial consultancy, market analysis …), initiate networks and projects on national and international level, for development, education, technology transfer and globalisation.

Sønderjyllands Erhvervcenter was closed January 01, 2007, because of the Danish administrative reform.
